Best travel book?
There are many famous travel writers, Freya Stark being one of them. She traveled extensively in Arabia, Africa and Asia. how many people like to read travel books and if not, why not?
made in US
A few years ago an Italian friend of mine travelled by train from Boston to Providence. She had only been in AmeriAca for a couple weeks and hadn't seen much of the country yet. She arrived looking astonished. "It's so ugly!"People from other rich countries can scarcely imagine the squalor of the man-made bits of America. In travel books they show you mostly natural environments: the Grand Canyon, whitewater rafting, horses in a field. If you see pictures with man-made things in them, it will be either a view of the New York skyline shot from a discreet distance, or a carefully cropped image of a seacoast town in Maine. How can it be, visitors must wonder. How can the richest country in the world look like this?Oddly enough, it may not be a coincidence. Americans are good at some things and bad at others. We're good at making movies and software, and bad at making cars and cities. And I think we may be good at what we're good at for the same reason we're bad at what we're bad at. We're impatient. In America, if you want to do something, you don't worry that it might come out badly, or upset delicate social balances, or that people might think you're getting above...
Egypt - Medinat Habu Temple
The Temple at Medinat Habu is located on the West Bank of the Nile in the ancient city of Thebes, now called Luxor. It's not as large as Karnak Temple, but the colors are better preserved and there are far fewer tourists. It's located next to the sleepy farming village of Kom Lolah. Some travel books name this site as the most overlooked in Luxor. hope you like, please if you have additional informations about this topic you are welcome, Good Luck.
want to visit Scotland
Hi, my dream is to stay in Scotland for awhile and absorb the culture- I don't have a clue on where to begin, have read some travel books and stuff, but I'm sure they just scratch the surface- I'm going to con my sister(she's a travel agent) into getting me discounts. I want to experience the works, even eat hagus! Anyone interested in sharing some ideas, experiences, etc.?
What's your favorite book involving time travel?
Do you like time travel books?:)My favorites are Time Traveler's Wife and a book written by Stephen Fry (I forgot the title) where a scientist turned back into time in order to make sure that Hitler was never born. Have you read any of those? What books involving time travel did you like?
Do You Love Traveling? Do You Own a lot of Travel Books?
I love traveling but I don't get to travel very much because of the budget constraints. I do own a lot of travel books though, I have some on Europe, Taiwan, Japan..etc. I tend to love those with personal experiences and lots of pictures, because by reading them I tend to feel that I am traveling too. What about you?
What is your favourite brand of travel books? Why?
My favourite is Lonely Planet. I think they give very good information for sights and accommodation. I like the maps they have inside the book of the whole country and its different areas. Sometimes through they do not explain distances very well. In Croatia I set out to walk 1km but it turned out to be 15km! I saw a Rough Guide that I liked the other day. I thing I like about this guide was the photos of the must see places. I think it gives me inspiration of places to visit on a trip that I am planning. Lets Go can be a good guide to have. I think it is great for budget trips.
What did Burton do to be overlooked in history
I wonder what his great Victorian did to be so overlooked in our history. He was an explorer, linquist, author and much more. I seem to remember being told at school that Livingstone discovered most of Africa. This is definitely not the case. He wrote many travel books of his journeys and other books translated from their original langauges. Far to many things to mention here.I believe he upset the authorities with a report he wrote for General Napier but he did have a wicked tongue on him and he loved to shock people. What do you think? Was he the greatest Victorian?
Do You Prefer to Read in English or in Your Own Language?
I am a Chinese and I did a major in English in school, so I have two language choices when it comes to books. I mostly prefer to read in English because I wish to take every chance to improve/ keep my English level. But occasionally we have some good travel books (with lots of personal experience and good drawings) in Chinese and I tend to prefer those in Chinese. What about you?
