| | Transporting Criminals to Another Country | | More than 200 years since the first boatload of English convicts reached our shores, overcrowded British jails are once again considering sending their prisoners Down Under. In a desperate move to combat what has become a national crisis, Prime Minister Tony Blair announced he will do anything possible — including sending convicts overseas — to relieve pressure on the country's "full to bursting" prison system. The Daily Telegraph reports that Australia's High Commissioner to the UK Richard Alston acknowledged the prospect of accepting UK prisoners at a recent function.
Britain's chief prisons inspector Anne Owers blames the crisis on a law change which allows judges to give indefinite sentences. "We have a serious crisis and one that is impacting on the ability to do rehabilitation work," she said in a damning report. "It is normally considered good practice to build an ark before the flood." The situation is so dire that the UK's Home Secretary John Reid has written a letter to judges demanding that only the most violent and dangerous criminals be locked up. Reid has been forced to think up radical options to free up prison cells, such as releasing prisoners early;... | |

| | The rings and tones of a mobile phone | | Heads you win, tails I lose. That's exactly the way I feel. I can't live without my mobile phone. And yet in my heart of hearts I feel that I should stop using it. Before you jump to conclusions, let me tell you I'm neither anti-development nor anti-high-tech. Yet the thought of getting into a time machine and transporting myself back to the "good old world" of fixed line telephones didn't occur to me out of nowhere. There are infinite health hazards in this modern (or post-modern, if you like it) world. Air and water (and all other) pollution, acid rain, pesticides and insecticides in vegetables and fruits, high fat content in fast and packed food, the perils of red meat and passive (in my case, active) smoking have for years transpired to turn modern life into a nightmare. As if those dangers were not enough, now comes another definitive warning: Mobile phone use could affect sperm count and could be linked to a decline in fertility. | |

| | Is the British Public Transport system the worst in the world? | | I have been using the British public transport system for many years now.Having travelled all round the world - it seems that we have by far the worst transport system. It is very expensive - unless you can book a ticket months in advance.Overcrowded - at peak periods, you have to stand and often have to be packed so tight it would break the law for transporting animals.Late - I have almost lost jobs as the trains and buses has been so consistently late.Unhelpful staff - most of the staff could not care less and seemed more depressed than the passengers.Where is the worst place to have to use public transport? | |
