| Optical Transport Network Tutorial | | Optical Transport Network TutorialThe amount of data traffic relative to voice traffic on optical networks and the total traffic volume
keeps increasing.1 These factors are the drivers behind emerging, flexible technologies to
supplement the mature, voice optimized, SONET/SDH transport infrastructure and help manage
network complexity. At the edge of the network, where data and voice combine in a common
infrastructure, new data-centric applications have emerged. An example is the combination of
virtual concatenation (VCAT), which provides flexible bandwidth groupings for SONET/SDH, Link
Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS), which provides dynamic bandwidth settings, and Generic
Framing Procedures (GFP), which provides a protocol agnostic frame container2, 3, 4. In the

| | Is there a link between HIV and other STIs? | | Having a sexually transmitted infection can increase your risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV. This is true whether you have open sores or breaks in the skin (as with syphilis, herpes, chancroid) or not (as with chlamydia and gonorrhea). Where there are breaks in the skin, HIV can enter and exit the body more easily. Even when there are no breaks in the skin, STIs can cause biological changes that may make HIV transmission more likely. Studies show that HIV-infected individuals who are infected with another STI are three to five times more likely to contract or transmit the virus through sexual contact. | |
| | How To Avoid Traffic Tickets | |
Make every effort to know and comply with basic traffic laws.
Get a copy of the driver's license manual from your state
licensing authority and review its contents.Don't attract attention to your vehicle by having loud
exhaust, windows tinted too dark, etc. Anything that causes a
police officer to look at your vehicle will make it more likely he
will notice expired tags or inspection sticker, or other
deficiency. If your state has a mandatory seatbelt law; wear your
seatbelt. If you forget to put it on, don't wait until you see a
police officer to remember to put it on. This will only cause the
officer to notice you when he might not have otherwise. The fact
that you just put it on may not be enough to avoid a citation. If
he spots you without it on or sees you putting it on, you can be
cited. You might only get a warning for having put it on, but
this is a gamble. If the officer is working a special seatbelt
detail you can count on a ticket. DON'T CALL ATTENTION TO
YOURSELF!Keep your vehicle in good condition, and all equipment such
as brakes, lights, etc. in working order. Burned out headlights
or tail lights just can't be missed at night. Remember;...
| | Study: 1 in 5 parents think kids online too much | | One in five American parents believe their kids are spending too much time on the Internet, though most say the online activities haven't affected grades either way.
In a study to be released Wednesday by the University of Southern California, 21 percent of adult Internet users with children believe the kids are online too long, compared with 11 percent in 2000. Still, that's less than the 49 percent who complain their kids watch too much TV.
About 80 percent of the children say the Internet is important for schoolwork, although three-quarters of the parents say grades haven't gone up or down since they got Internet access. Forty-seven percent of the adults say they have withheld Internet use as a form of punishment. Banning television is still more popular, reported by 57 percent of adults surveyed.
The study, meanwhile, found that although only 27 percent of cell phone owners use them for text messaging, photo transmitting and other non-voice functions, the figure grows to 54 percent among those 18-24 and 45 percent among those under 18.
The study has been conducted most years since 2000. Over that time, researchers have seen Internet use grow to 78 percent, from 67...

The gambling aspect of the bill was never voted on by the Senate in any form. A similar bill was approved by the House of Representatives several months prior, and thus was tacked onto the Safe Port Act as the result of a conference committee report. Congressional conference committees are common practice when the House and Senate both approve similar, but not exactly the same, bills. In this case though the Senate never debated the gambling aspects of the bill.
Both the Senate and House of Representatives were simply presented the Safe Port Act with the gambling wording added, and were essentially forced to vote in favor of the bill since the ports aspect of the bill was considered "must pass" legislation (a must pass bill is usually a non-controversial bill...
