Don - The Chase begins
Starring Amitabh Bachchan….oops, Shah Rukh Khan & Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Isha Koppiker, Boman Irani, Om Puri, Arjun Rampal Directed by Farhan Akhtar Rating:* ½"Don ko pakadna mushqil hi nahin, namumkin bhi hai". (it's not just difficult to catch Don, it's impossible). You could say that again! Farhan Akhtar who once upon a time made one of Indian cinema's prevalent pathbreakers Dil Chahta Hai, slips into a gamine groove to recreate Salim-Javed's script from the original 1978 film of the same name.Let's not play the blame game. But whoever thought a slicker version….no, make that a much much slicker version of the clever wheels-within-wheels 1978 script would work better when packaged in gallons of gloss, has gall…and a vision that just stops short of being audacious. This is a cheeky and chic homage to the earlier Don. It goes into places that the earlier film couldn't have dreamt of.Farhan Akhtar's feisty feast of muted fury film opens in Paris (totally unnecessary) and quickly moves to Kuala Lampur where the narrative stays put as Farah Akhar tries to put across the story of Don, his doppelganger Vijay, the vendetta-oriented Roma (Priyanka...
"Ratatouille" a masterful blend of ingredients
"Ratatouille" a masterful blend of ingredients Sunday June 17 2:47 PM ETBrad Bird and Pixar Animation Studios are proving to be an unbeatable combination. Bird, the cartoon writer-director with delightfully off-kilter sensibilities, and Pixar, the cutting-edge computer-animation company that places so much emphasis on character, have their second hit together in "Ratatouille," a follow-up to the universally popular "The Incredibles."Who would think a rat in a restaurant's kitchen would induce anything other than comic slapstick involving knives and cleavers flying in all directions? Yet Bird builds a comic world in which a rat can become a chef and food can take on an almost unbearable sensuality.Yes, there's something in the kitchen for everyone in "Ratatouille," so the Mouse House should clear a wing in its hall of fame for Cousin Rat. "Ratatouille" might not reach the international boxoffice heights of "The Incredibles" -- then again, maybe it will -- but the film does rep another huge leap in CGI technique and imagination by the Pixar folks.Heroes with impossible dreams are the stuff movies are made of. But "Ratatouille" gives us two seemingly hapless...

The Photograph, Chapter Eleven 11.1: Hard Answers
CHAPTER ELEVEN11.1: Hard AnswersFrank Hobbs sat at the table to my immediate right, smiling and shaking his head. He was working on a drink – not sure if it was his first, third, or how many. He scooted his chair back and slowly stood, coming over to my table – our table and slid into the chair opposite mine. “This is where I sat, right?”He played with his drink, swirling his ice cubes in a circle with his index finger.“Kind of early in the day for that, don’t you think?”He shrugged, “Early? Depends. Tell me John, what time is it? Do you even know anymore?”“How’d you know I’d be here?”Frank shrugged again, “A hunch. I don’t know what the hell you call it, but it hit me around nine o’clock this morning.”He leaned forward; a dull seriousness shadowed his expression. “It was you, wasn’t it?”Frank chuckled.“Uncle John. Not very inventive, but effective.”“You remembered.”He shook his head no.“No… no, that’s just it. I didn’t remember. Yesterday, I remember and none of this existed, not even in the most remote recesses of memory. I remember everything about yesterday and what I felt and remembered yesterday, and you and me...
Lamest Excuse Ever
Three weeks ago I went out for the Sunday paper and when I got to the vending machine I was taken for two bucks, no paper. The paper’s price was $1.00. After I was taken the first time, I went back for more abuse and got taken a second time. With a slow burn I got back in my car, and as I was about to pull away from the monster coin-eating machine, a woman in an SUV pulled up aside me. I told her not to use the machine; that I was taken for two bucks. She replied that she knew … she was taken for $1.25 just moments before and since she saw me at the machine she thought she’d see if I had been able to get the paper.Well, I came home and called the newspaper and asked for a refund. I was told that I’d probably have it by Tuesday … that was July 27. No refund yet.I got on the horn this morning, about 10 a.m. and left voice mail regarding that incident. Nobody returned my call, so I called again about 12:15. Finally I got a voice rather than a robot.I explained the situation to a youngish-sounding man asking if the newspaper no longer reimbursed customers for lost money. He responded that “usually” once or twice a month he sends refunds to customers, adding, “I...

What best describes your love style?
Is it love at first site or love comes softly? For me it has always been love at first site. Or what I mistakenly thought was love. It wasn't until I met my fiance and the love grew slow (I'm talking better than a year here) that I figured out what true love is. Now instead of the all consuming desire and hot fire of new love, I have the smoldering, slow burn of something with someone greater than I have ever expected to find.
