| How To Buy a Suit | | The men's business suit: ubiquitous, ingrained, versatile, mandatory, and a staple of industrial age attire for over one hundred years. Considering how fashion trends normally fluctuate wildly even in the space of twenty years, it is amazing how little the basic business suit has changed. About the most variety offered is the color scheme, which varies through navy blue, gray, khaki, and camel. Here's a quick, easy guide to picking out the clothing ensemble which you'll spend a good portion of your life wearing:Choosing a jacket style: The two-button, single-breasted jacket is a popular style, but three or four button jackets are also available and are usually seen in colder climates. Only thin men should wear formal double-breasted jackets, which tend to add bulk to your figure. They have to be kept buttoned at all times, or else the jacket hangs awkwardly.Select a fabric, its color, and pattern. If you opt for a patterned fabric, check to see that the patterns line up at the shoulder and lapel seams. High-quality worsted wool is the most seasonally versatile fabric. Cotton and linen are better for summer wear. Avoid blends that are made with too much polyester, as they... | |
| | | Three Letters from Teddy.... | | Teddy’s letter came today and now that I’ve read it, I will place it in my cedar chest with the other things that are important to my life.“I wanted you to be the first to know.”I smiled as I read the words he had written and my heart welled with a pride that I had no right to feel.I have not seen Teddy Stallard since he was a student in my fifth grade class fifteen years ago. It was early in my career, and I had only been teaching for two years. From the first day he stepped into my classroom, I disliked Teddy. Teachers (although everyone knows differently) are not supposed to have favorites in a class, but most especially are they not to show dislike for a child, any child. Nevertheless, every year there are one or two children that one cannot help but be attached to, for teachers are human, and it is human nature to like bright, pretty, intelligent people, whether they are ten years old or twenty-five. And sometimes, not too often, fortunately, there will be one or two students to whom the teacher just can’t seem to relate.I had thought myself quite capable of handling my personal feelings along that line until Teddy walked into my life. There wasn’t a child... | |
| | Does anyone collect cuff links? | | I've been collecting them for a few years, in a small sort of way. I only collect the ones that are interesting to look at, rather than the expensive ones. I have ones with animals on them, and insignia from companies, and car manufacturers' ones, and garish ones that other people wouldn't wear in a hundred years, and ones with heads of people, or maps of countries. | |
| | What's the thing you love to collect? | | These are not my bears here. But I have over 100 ty beanie babies. I started collecting them when my daughter was three. I a sweet collection of them in a bucket. I take them out once a year. I change the ziplock bags they are in. Give them hugs and kisses and place them back in the bags. Then they go back to storing for the following year. I have seasons as well as holiday bears. I have a very cute easter one I have out on my dresser. | |
| | What devices DO NOT need computerization? Sofas? Ice machines? Cuff links? | | If you've seen any of the 'future-tech' shows, you may realize that slowly, human households are becoming more computerized. With a computer network, it's possible to operate your entire house using voice commands. While I think that this luxury is extreme, it might be strange to wonder which devices do not need computerization. We probably don't need computers in our cuff links. We probably don't need computers in our chairs. And most likely, we don't need computers to regulate the temperature of our ice cubes and tell us when to get a refill.

| | You May Be Richer Than You Think | | While rummaging through some of my belongings I came across some items that are possibly worth a few bucksAmong those items is a “Railroad Pocketwatch.” It doesn’t sing, it doesn’t play music, it doesn't predict the future. It just tells the time. It’s gold and it’s in perfect working condition. The watch was left to me many years ago by a gentleman who worked for a railroad in Pennsylvania much of his life. He was probably close to 90 or perhaps older, when he died.I use a Casio wristwatch that cost me about $9.95. It serves its purpose. I never “use” the pocketwatch … there’s no “pocketwatch pocket” in my torn off jeans, and if there were I’d find it cumbersome to have to stop my bike, reach into a watch pocket to retrieve the watch to learn the time. A flick of the wrist easily does that for me.Then there are rings, crosses, tie tacks, and cuff links … all of which I haven’t worn in YEARS. All are either gold or silver, some with semi-precious or precious stones. I was amazed at how many items I’ve amassed over the years; items I have no desire to use anymore. They're just lying there in one of my dresser drawers.That... | |
